Learning Cycle

1. VISIT A KUMON CENTER ONCE OR TWICE A WEEK. Kumon study is individualized for each student, unlike regular class work at school, where students must conform to whatever is being taught.  Students visit a Kumon Center once or twice a week (for approximately 30-60 minutes), at a time that is convenient for them during the center's hours of operation. They complete the Kumon materials that have been individually prepared for them.

2. STUDY FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME WITH TOTAL CONCENTRATION. Each student's goal is to complete assigned worksheets at a timed pace that is comfortable for them.  They spend an average of 20-30 minutes working on subject material, under supervision of a certified Kumon Instructor.  Through focused concentration, daily work, and repetition, Kumon students develop their own disciplined study habits.

3. DEVELOP SELF-CONFIDENCE AND INCREASE MOTIVATION. Students submit completed worksheets to an Instructor or grader for correction.  Since material is always at the “just right” level matched to a student's academic ability, they usually score at or close to 100 percent accuracy.  The self-confidence that comes from knowing “I did it by myself!” motivates student interest to study higher levels.  Students are praised for their accomplishments through public ceremonies, newsletters, and private recognition.  Additionally, they earn prizes, stickers, Kumon trading cards, and Kumon "dollars" that may be used monthly to purchase fun items at the center's "Kumon Store."

4. CORRECT MISTAKES, IF ANY. By identifying and correcting mistakes themselves, students' academic abilities are further enhanced.  Kumon Instructors are available to provide hints and advice when a new study topic is introduced and to help students who do not fully understand how to solve a given problem.

5. HAVE ALL SCORES RECORDED AND PROGRESS MONITORED.
The student's daily performance, including study time and accuracy, are recorded in a specialized computer program designed to assist the Kumon instructor in making recommendations for appropriate individualized future assignments (always personally planned by the Kumon Instructor).

6. COLLECT THE NEXT HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT, AND IT'S TIME TO GO HOME.  Daily study is a  Kumon Method requirement. Before going home, students are given Kumon materials to complete at home before the next Center visit.  Students develop good study habits through focused concentration on the homework and daily completion.  Parental involvement is critical to success in this program.  Parents should ensure the date and time are recorded on homework sheets, and grade homework (student must correct homework up to 100% before returning to the center).  Home grading allows students to receive instant feedback on any mistakes they might have made, which ensures errors aren't reinforced.  It also ensures students have an increased communication link, and see this as a priority for their parents.  Answer keys are provided for home grading purposes.
